[[en]]We are going back in time by 22 years. Against all odds from friends and family, I became an assistant at the University. Not a particularly special time except it was then that Napster became world news. This software program enabled everyone to easily exchange music. You may know of this possibility under the name "file sharing”; the exchange of digital files including music and later film too. The music industry responded to the declining sales of music through the classic carriers, such as the CD, by beginning a witch-hunt on Napster and its users. Some artists, such as Metallica, even personally argued this battle from the sector. But, as expected, that didn't work except to put a big dent in the image of both the industry and the artist. Digital music and film distribution was born and this Satan child would not die. [[nl]]We gaan even 22 jaar terug in de tijd. Ik werd, tegen alle verwachtingen van vrienden en familie in, assistent aan de Universiteit. Een weinig bijzondere tijd behoudens dat Napster toen wereldnieuws werd. Dit softwareprogramma stelde iedereen in staat om op een eenvoudige manier muziek uit te wisselen. Deze mogelijkheid kent u misschien onder de benaming  ‘file sharing’, het uitwisselen van digitale bestanden waaronder muziek en later ook film. De muziekindustrie reageerde op de terugvallende verkoopcijfers van muziek op de klassieke dragers, zoals de CD, door een heksenjacht te openen op Napster en de gebruikers. Enkele artiesten, zoals Metallica, voerden vanuit de sector deze strijd zelfs persoonlijk aan. Maar zoals te verwachten leverde dat niets op, behalve een flinke deuk in het imago van zowel de industrie als de artiest. Digitale muziek -en filmverspreiding was geboren en dit satanskind zou niet sterven.

[[en]]And that brings me seamlessly to Iron Maiden. This British band broke through with the album "The Number of The Beast" and the eponymous title song. These long-haired rockers also saw the classic sales of their albums plummet due to illegal music downloads. They devised a new strategy, choosing to play more live music (Rock in Rio), offer exclusive merchandising (the mascot Eddie) and use a digital offering (the computer game Legacy of the Beast). Finding and seizing opportunities, including taking into account difficulties and challenges, is what we mean when we talk about positive focus. Positive thinking alone is not enough. After all, it is a fine line between positivity and naivety. A thorough analysis of reality, weighing up opportunities and taking the right action goes far beyond what self-help books make us believe. It is hard work but it can work. Today Iron Maiden has a net worth of $ 125 million. Their singer Bruce Dickinson can be satisfied with an income that exceeds one hundred million. Now, as a temporary self-employed unemployed person, I have an income that is slightly lower than Bruce's. I do have his autograph and an Iron Maiden drumstick, caught in flight during their performance. But neither for me nor for you are some nice memories of better times enough to keep our positive focus. What can help is the combination of three steps. [[nl]]En dat brengt mij naadloos bij Iron Maiden. Deze Britse band brak door met het album ‘The Number of The Beast’ en de gelijknamige titelsong. Ook deze langharige rockers zagen de klassieke verkoop van hun albums kelderen door het illegaal downloaden van muziek. Door een nieuwe strategie kozen zij er echter voor om meer live te gaan spelen (Rock in Rio), exclusieve merchandising te gaan aanbieden (de mascotte Eddie) én in te zetten op een digitaal aanbod (het computerspel Legacy of the beast). De opportuniteiten zoeken en benutten, inclusief het in rekening brengen van moeilijkheden en uitdagingen, daar gaat het om wanneer we het hebben over positieve focus. Positief denken alleen volstaat niet. Het is immers een dunne lijn tussen positiviteit en naïviteit. Een grondige analyse van de realiteit, afwegingen maken tussen opportuniteiten en de juiste handelingen stellen, gaat veel verder dan wat menig zelfhulpboek ons wil doen geloven. Het is hard werken, maar het kan werken. Vandaag heeft Iron Maiden een netwaarde van 125 miljoen dollar. Hun zanger Bruce Dickinson kan zich tevreden stellen met een inkomen dat de honderd miljoen overstijgt. Nu beschik ik als tijdelijk zelfstandige werkloze over een inkomen dat nét iets lager ligt dan dat van Bruce. Wel heb ik zijn handtekening én een Iron Maiden drumstick, zelf gevangen in de vlucht tijdens hun optreden. Maar noch voor mij, noch voor jullie volstaan wat leuke herinneringen aan betere tijden om onze positieve focus te houden. Wat wel kan helpen is de combinatie van drie stappen.

[[en]]The first and, in my opinion, most important step is to accept yourself and reality. Self-acceptance is the ability to see one's own limitations in a certain situation and time period. The advantage for you is then to spend your limited time and energy on the things on which you can have an impact. Superman and Superwoman are cartoon characters. None of us can do everything. If "Kryptonite" did exist, I would suggest a heavy-handed application to the self-proclaimed all-rounders. Now let's finally be open about our limitations. That is fairer to ourselves and certainly also to our environment. After all, by promoting your limitations, you let people know what they can or cannot turn to you for. That is why I also temporarily resigned my mandate as a Director at Mobile School. Our organization now needs a board of directors with talents other than mine. The moment my talents are needed I will be there again, I promise! And that also brings me to organizations and specific interest groups. It is a strength that you as an organization fight against a reality. However, if there are no valid indications that you can change that reality, you may be better off just accepting it. Instead invest the released time and energy into the opportunities that have a positive impact on this reality. Think of the music industry: designing a high-quality and legal digital offering makes much more sense than using all means to combat illegal alternatives. [[nl]]Een eerste, en naar mijn inziens belangrijkste, stap ligt in het aanvaarden van jezelf en van de realiteit. Zelfaanvaarding is het vermogen om ook de eigen beperkingen te zien in een bepaalde situatie en periode. Het voordeel voor jezelf is dat je dan jouw beperkte tijd en energie kan spenderen aan de zaken waarop jij wel impact kan uitoefenen. Superman en supervrouw zijn stripfiguren, niemand van ons kan alles. Moest ‘Kryptonite’ wel bestaan, dan stel ik een hardhandige inbrenging ervan voor bij de zelfverklaarde alleskunners. Laten we nu eindelijk ook eens uitkomen voor onze beperkingen. Dat is eerlijker tegenover onszelf, maar zeker ook tegenover onze omgeving. Door uit te komen voor je beperkingen laat je immers weten waarvoor mensen al dan niet bij jou terecht kunnen. Daarom heb ik ook tijdelijk mijn mandaat neergelegd als bestuurder bij Mobile School. Onze organisatie heeft nu een raad van bestuur nodig met andere talenten dan de mijne. Op het moment dat er nood is aan mijn talenten zal ik er weer staan, beloofd! En dat brengt mij ook bij organisaties en in het specifiek belangenorganisaties. Het is sterk dat je als organisatie vecht tegen een realiteit. Als er echter geen gegronde aanwijzingen zijn die je die realiteit kan veranderen, dan doe je er soms beter aan om dit gewoon te aanvaarden. Steek de vrijgekomen tijd en energie dan beter in de opportuniteiten die een positieve impact hebben op deze realiteit. Denk aan de muziekindustrie, het vormgeven van een kwalitatief en legaal digitaal aanbod is veel zinvoller dan het alle middelen in te zetten op het bestrijden van de illegale alternatieven.

[[en]]You, as an individual or organization, are ready for step two if you can accept that everything is not possible for everyone. At that moment you can shape your reason for existence, or the obscured "purpose". Purpose is about what impact you want to have and knowing what impact you can have. Iron Maiden is not a boys band, their goal is to let "The British wave of Heavy Metal" strike worldwide. It is unbelievable how few people have an answer for me on what impact they want to have on their organization or team. Keeping a positive focus, as the concept also states, lies in making choices. The mobile school's raison d'être is to increase the self-esteem and self-confidence of street children. That is a choice, but a choice that we as a team strongly believe in. [[nl]]Je bent, als individu of organisatie, klaar voor stap twee als je kan aanvaarden dat alles zijn voor iedereen niet tot de mogelijkheden behoort. Op dat moment kan je jouw bestaansreden, of het gedoodverfde ‘purpose’ vormgeven. Purpose gaat over welke impact je wil hebben, wetende welke impact je kan hebben. Iron Maiden is geen boys band, hun doel is om ‘The British wave of Heavy Metal’ te laten inslaan wereldwijd. Het is ontzettend om vast te stellen hoe weinig mensen mij kunnen antwoorden welke impact zij willen hebben op hun organisatie of team. Het houden van positieve focus ligt, zoals het begrip ook stelt, in het maken van keuzes. De bestaansreden van de mobiele school is de zelfwaardering en het zelfvertrouwen van straatkinderen te verhogen. Dat is een keuze, maar wel een keuze waar wij als team heel sterk in geloven.

[[en]]It is only when you know what you can and cannot do, that you are able to decide what impact you want to have and can then move on to step three: define progress and grow. Much has been said and written about the "Growth Mindset", "Goalsetting", "Hope Theory" and "Pathway Thinking". In summary, these theories boil down to the fact that if you become convinced that completing your reason for existence (purpose) will not work, you will probably be proven right. However they also teach us that the chance of achieving a goal without setting it first is relatively small. This may sound trivial, but it is not. Without the willingness to set concrete results, goals and actions, the previous steps remain empty boxes. Ever heard of "Ed Force One"? Well, that's the Boeing 747 with Bruce Dickinson behind the controls that transported Iron Maiden and their crew to over 50 locations worldwide. Good that he puts his reason for existence - to learn -  into practice, but disturbing that "What does this button do?" is the title of his autobiography. [[nl]]Het is pas wanneer je weet wat je wel en niet kan, je op basis daarvan hebt besloten welke impact je wil hebben, dat je kan overgaan naar stap drie: vooruitgang definiëren en groeien. Er is al veel gezegd en geschreven over de ‘Growth Mindset’, ‘Goal setting’, ‘Hope Theory’ en ‘Pathway Thinking’. Samengevat komen deze theorieën er enerzijds op neer dat als je ervan overtuigd raakt dat het invullen van jouw bestaansreden (purpose) niet zal lukken, je waarschijnlijk gelijk zal krijgen. Anderzijds leren deze ons ook dat de kans dat je een doel behaalt, zonder het eerst te stellen, betrekkelijk klein is. Dit klinkt misschien triviaal, maar dat is het niet. Zonder de bereidheid om over te gaan tot het stellen van concrete resultaatsgebieden, doelen en acties blijven de voorgaande stappen lege dozen. Ooit al gehoord van ‘Ed Force One’? Wel, dat is de Boeing 747 met Bruce Dickinson achter de stuurknuppels die Iron Maiden en hun crew vervoerde naar meer dan 50 locaties wereldwijd. Knap dat hij zijn bestaansreden - blijven leren - zo in de praktijk zet, maar wel verontrustend dat ‘What does this button do?’ de titel is van zijn autobiografie.
